People new to Montana often come to the state with some misconceptions. They zip through Eastern Montana at high speed and all they can see in their mind's eye is the mountains. They move to the mountains and figure that's where all the game animals are hiding and where the upland birds and waterfowl are, too. How wrong they are.

If you look at the travel patterns in Montana during the months of September, October and November, you'll notice all those western Montana residents are streaming east across U.S. 2, Highway 200 and I-90. They know where the best hunting is. It's in Eastern Montana.

Heavy-antlered mule deer, trophy whitetails, pronghorn antelope, those majestic Missouri Breaks elk and the best upland bird and waterfowl hunting in the state can be found in Northeastern Montana. It also has some of the friendliest folks in the state and some big tracts of public land where you can find good hunting.

Hunting generally starts on Sept. 1 with the grouse, partridge and dove season. Bowhunting for deer, elk and antelope follows closely. Waterfowl hunting starts around Oct. 1. Pronghorn antelope begins in early October followed by the deer and elk rifle opener two weeks later. Most big game hunting is done on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Bird and waterfowl seasons generally run through the end of the year.
